Once October starts the holidays are spread out over the months to Christmas so it’s important to think about all the gifts you will need to buy and how many visitors there will be in your home.
Before you start to spend your money on gifts for family and friends, it’s important to make sure that you have covered any house repairs or bills. One important area to remember is your roof, the holiday season would not be fun if this were to go wrong.

If you do not keep on top of repairs to your roof, your property may become damaged by weather, and who wants their new living room, complete with leather sofas and 42 inch TV, or their new dining room complete with mahogany dining room furniture, to be spoilt by a leaky roof?
Different roofing materials do last longer than others, depending on the materials, the quality of them and the quality of the workmanship. Then, of course, there is the weather, and if your roof is not completely covered, bad weather can weaken the timbers underneath. In the long run this can lead to expensive repairs. One sign you may need roof repairs is if there are stains on the ceiling after rainfall. If you notice these, don’t delay in getting someone to look at the roof for you and to repair it if necessary.
Here are some tips for checking the health of your roof.
If you find you’re having to patch the roof on a regular basis then maybe you should consider redoing the roof completely. Ask a roofer (or two) for their advice and compare quotations for the work.
Of course replacing a slate roof is expensive. Replacing it with a tiled roof could be a good option. If you live in a semidetached or terraced house, you’ll need to base your decision on how your new roof will look compared to your neighbours’ ones.
You can check the state of a slate or tiled roof in the following ways.
If the roof is unlined on the inside, go up and look for areas where the sunlight is coming through. These are the areas you may need to concentrate on. Look for staining on the timbers to see if water has been coming in.
You can also check from outside on ground level. You’ll be able to see where slates have fallen off or slipped out of place. Also look for changes in the colour of the tiles and look at the flashings (around the chimney). A good way to check closer is by using binoculars.
When you know your roof and home will make it through the winter, you can relax, look forward to the holidays and hopefully many gifts.
